Northlight University has committed to running its entire campus on renewable energy by 2028. The plan combines 14,000 square metres of rooftop solar, a geothermal district heating loop and a campus microgrid that can island itself during outages.
The university's energy use has already fallen 22% since 2022 thanks to building retrofits. The new plan eliminates the remaining natural gas heating and shifts the vehicle fleet to electric.
Facilities director Sam Whitfield estimates the programme will pay for itself within eleven years and will be used as a living case study in the Environmental Engineering curriculum.
